'Firestick' our Diocesan statement on Aboriginal Education was launched on July 27, 2005. Members of the local Aboriginal community, Diocesan schools and the Catholic Schools Office attended the launch at Mater Dei Catholic College, Wagga Wagga.

'Firestick' clearly states what we stand for in the area of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education – the improvement of learning outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

By improving the outcomes for this sector of our community the learning outcomes for ALL students will be enhanced.

The goals identified in 'Firestick' are:

  • Improving the educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
  • Enhancing the educational outcomes for all students
  • Reaffirming our commitment to reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

To achieve these goals, the Catholic Schools Office and its schools have identified the following areas as being priorities:

  • Decision making
  • Professional learning
  • Employment
  • Student learning
  • Participation
